CES PR: How to Earn Coverage at the Biggest Tech Show of the Year

By · · 11 min read

Digitize title card for a guide to CES PR and how to earn coverage at the biggest tech show of the year

To earn coverage at CES, decide what story your product tells beyond your booth, brief the right reporters in December under embargo, and give them something to see, touch, or test during the show. CES 2027 runs January 6 to 9 in Las Vegas, with media days on January 4 and 5. Most of the coverage is decided before the doors open.

CES is the most crowded news week in consumer technology. Thousands of exhibitors announce in the same few days, and the reporters covering the show are booked solid before they land. Companies that treat CES as a place to start pitching usually leave with a few booth photos and no stories.

This guide covers the 2027 calendar, how media access works, what reporters want, a timeline that works, and the mistakes that bury good products.

When is CES 2027, and which dates matter for PR?

CES 2027 runs Wednesday, January 6 to Saturday, January 9, in Las Vegas, but the most important PR dates fall before the show floor opens. According to the Consumer Technology Association’s dates and hours page, Media Day 1 is Monday, January 4, at Mandalay Bay and includes CES Unveiled, and Media Day 2 is Tuesday, January 5. Both are media only.

The CES Innovation Awards rules for 2027 show how early the cycle starts: applications opened June 5, 2026, closed August 19, 2026, and honorees are announced November 9, 2026. Entrants may embargo their announcement until 4 p.m. Pacific on January 4, 2027. If you missed the 2027 window, the awards cycle for the following show will likely open in early summer.

How big is CES, and how many reporters attend?

CES is very large, and the press corps is large too, but it is spread across thousands of exhibitors. That ratio is the core PR problem.

CTA’s audited attendance figures for CES 2026, released in March 2026, counted 148,392 participants, including 7,037 media, content creators, and industry analysts. The show had more than 4,100 exhibitors across more than 2.6 million net square feet, and about 1,200 startups in Eureka Park. International participants made up 37.6% of attendance.

Seven thousand media attendees sounds like plenty. But that number includes creators and analysts, and it is shared across more than four thousand exhibitors, each with news. The reporters who matter to your category, at outlets such as The Verge, Engadget, CNET, and TechCrunch, have schedules full of briefings well before the show.

Who can get a CES media badge?

CES media badges are for working journalists and qualifying content creators, not for PR teams. CTA’s registration information for CES 2027 sets clear criteria:

  • Print and online media need three technology bylines from the past nine months, an assignment letter from an editor, or a masthead listing.
  • Content creators need recent platform analytics meeting a follower or view threshold, plus three technology content links from the past nine months.
  • Broadcast media need an assignment letter plus three technology examples.
  • PR and marketing professionals, publishers, sales representatives, and brand ambassadors do not qualify. They register as industry attendees.

This matters for planning. Your team will not be in Media Day sessions, so your access to reporters runs through scheduled briefings, Unveiled if you exhibit there, your booth, and your own events.

What do reporters want from CES pitches?

Reporters want a short, relevant pitch about something they can see, with access to the people who made it. At CES the bar on relevance is higher, because volume is higher.

The broader data from Muck Rack’s State of Journalism 2026, based on a survey of nearly 1,100 journalists, points the same way:

  • 69% prefer pitches under 200 words.
  • 70% value clear relevance to their beat.
  • 58% value interview access to sources.
  • 40% value original data or research.
  • 37% value high-resolution images.
  • 78% prefer pitches sent before noon.

For CES, translate that into a pitch that states, in the first two sentences, what the product does, why it matters now, and when the reporter can try it. Our guide on how to pitch journalists covers structure and follow-up; the CES version is shorter and more specific.

A template we adapt:

Subject: Under embargo: [product] does [specific thing], hands-on Jan 5 at [location]

Hi [name], you covered [specific story] last month, so I thought this would be relevant. On January 5 at 9 a.m. PT, [company] will announce [one-sentence news]. It matters because [one fact or data point]. [Founder or product lead] is in Las Vegas January 4 to 8 and can walk you through a hands-on demo in 20 minutes. Specs, pricing, availability, and images are in the embargoed kit here: [link]. Would a December call or a slot on January 5 or 6 work?

The six-step CES PR timeline: decide whether CES is the right stage, lock the story and proof, book press events early, pre-brief reporters under embargo, run the show-floor program, and work the follow-up window

What is the CES PR timeline that works?

The timeline that works starts in the summer, peaks with December briefings, and continues for weeks after the show. Here is the six-step process we run.

  1. Decide if CES is your stage (summer to early fall). CES rewards hands-on products with a story bigger than a spec sheet. If your announcement is a software update or an incremental model, a separate news moment may earn more coverage. Factor the cost into your 2027 PR budget early.
  2. Lock the story and the proof (October). One headline, one demo, final specs, pricing, availability, and a spokesperson who has been through media training. Undecided pricing is the most common reason a CES story stalls.
  3. Book press events early (October to November). If you exhibit, CTA’s exhibitor PR guide describes CES Unveiled, which it pitches as a way to reach media two days before the show opens, media briefing rooms available on January 6 and 7 on a first-come basis, and submissions to the CES Daily and the exhibitor media center. Independent media showcases have also run alongside CES in past years; confirm current dates directly with organizers.
  4. Pre-brief under embargo (December). Build a list of 20 to 30 reporters who cover your exact category, and offer embargoed briefings in the first three weeks of December. CTA’s opted-in media list becomes available through the Exhibitor Dashboard from December 1; CTA itself advises filtering by product category rather than sending to everyone.
  5. Run the show-floor program (January 4 to 9). Schedule demos in fixed slots, hold a press-only window at the booth, and keep your online newsroom updated daily with images, video, and specs.
  6. Work the follow-up window (January to February). Review units, hands-on follow-ups, trade stories, and creator content land for weeks. Send review units promptly to reporters who asked, and pitch the trade press with the angle their readers care about.

Hypothetical example: a consumer hardware brand at its first CES

This is a hypothetical scenario to illustrate the timeline, not a client story.

A consumer brand with $30 million in revenue is launching a smart sleep device at CES 2027 and has a 10-by-20 booth. The first plan is to send a press release on the morning of January 6 to the full CES media list and hope reporters stop by.

A better plan:

  • October: the team narrows the story to one claim it can prove, with data from a sleep study it ran with a university lab, and finalizes U.S. pricing and a ship date.
  • November: it books a Media Day slot at a showcase and reserves a briefing room for January 6.
  • December 1 to 18: it offers embargoed briefings to 25 reporters covering health tech and smart home, prioritizing those who reviewed sleep products in the past year, and offers two of them early review units.
  • January 4 and 5: it runs hands-on demos for reporters it briefed, plus walk-ins.
  • January 6 to 9: the booth runs scheduled demos every 30 minutes, with a press-only hour each morning.
  • Late January: it ships review units, pitches a trend story to the health trades using the study data, and briefs creators through its influencer program.

The result to aim for is not a press release in front of thousands of exhibitors. It is a short list of hands-on stories by reporters who already cover the category, then reviews that keep working through the spring.

What do most teams get wrong about CES PR?

Most teams start too late and pitch too broadly. The rest of the mistakes follow from those two.

MistakeWhat happensDo this instead
Pitching in JanuaryReporters’ schedules are already fullBrief under embargo in December
Blasting the full media listIgnored by reporters outside your category20 to 30 named reporters on your beat
No price or ship dateStory cannot be writtenFinal pricing and availability before pitching
Demo not ready for Media DaysLost first-access windowFreeze the demo build by mid-December
Treating CES as one dayMissed reviews and trade storiesPlan a six-week follow-up window
Spokesperson unpreparedWeak quotes, no follow-upsMedia training in November
Overstating “Innovation Award winner”Credibility damageUse CTA’s exact honoree or Best of Innovation wording

One more: confusing exposure with coverage. A booth visit from a reporter is not a story. Ask in every briefing what the reporter is working on and offer what helps that story.

How do you make CES coverage work after the show?

Make CES coverage work by reusing it everywhere buyers and AI engines look. The show produces a dense burst of independent coverage, and most companies let it fade.

  • Link it from your newsroom and product pages, with outlet names and dates.
  • Brief your sales and retail teams so buyers hear about the coverage within the week.
  • Pitch retail and trade outlets with the angle their readers need: margins, availability, and category demand.
  • Amplify the best pieces with paid social to target accounts and investors.
  • Update owned pages so the facts reporters published match your site, which helps AI engines describe the product accurately.

The full process is in our guide to product launch PR, our Series A launch case study shows how a launch can be sequenced around a single exclusive, and the media directory has profiles of the newsrooms that cover consumer technology.

Frequently asked questions

When should we start CES PR planning?

Start in the summer if you want to enter the CES Innovation Awards, whose 2027 entry window ran from June to August 2026, and no later than October for the media program. December is when most briefings happen, so the story, pricing, and demo need to be ready by late November.

Can PR professionals get a CES media badge?

No. CTA’s registration rules for CES 2027 say PR and marketing professionals, publishers, sales representatives, and brand ambassadors do not qualify for media credentials and must register as industry attendees. Media badges are for working journalists, broadcast media, and creators who meet the stated criteria.

Is CES worth it for a startup?

It can be, if the product is hands-on and the story fits reporters covering the show. CES 2026 had about 1,200 startups in Eureka Park, so standing out requires a sharp angle, December briefings, and a demo reporters can try. If your news is incremental, a less crowded moment may earn more coverage for the same budget.

Should we send a press release during CES?

Yes, but as a reference document, not a pitch. Publish the release on the morning of your announcement and host it in your newsroom and the CES exhibitor media center. The coverage comes from the one-to-one briefings you held beforehand.

What is the CES embargo convention?

Embargoed briefings in December are standard practice for CES. Agree on the exact date, time, and time zone with each reporter in writing, and keep the embargo consistent across outlets. For Innovation Award honorees, CTA’s rules allow holding the announcement until 4 p.m. Pacific on January 4, 2027.
